The map

Italy, one route at a time.

Ticket to Ride Italy is a customised, unofficial version of Ticket to Ride (Zug um Zug in German), the board game by Alan R. Moon published by Days of Wonder. The map follows the real Italian rail and ferry network as closely as possible; a few routes had to be moved or simplified to keep the board readable.

The package contains the map, the destination tickets and the rules in Italian and English. Trains, train cards and stations come from your own box: you need either the USA or the Europe edition.

  • Rail and sea

Ferries link the mainland to Sardinia and Sicily, and tunnels cross the mountains, just as in the Europe edition.

  • Two ways to play

Basic rules based on the USA edition, or advanced rules with stations, tunnels and ferries based on the Europe edition.

  • Print at home

Eight A4 sheets to tape together, or one large file for a print shop. The tickets fit on three sheets.

News

There is now an official Italy map.

Many years after this fan map was drawn, Days of Wonder published an official map of Italy, in the Map Collection expansion that pairs it with Japan.

Rules

Two ways to play.

Ticket to Ride Italy is for 2 to 5 players. Anything not covered here works as in the rulebook of the original edition the rules are based on. Highlighted text marks the differences from it.

Basic rulesBased on Ticket to Ride (USA)

Setup

Each player takes 42 trains (instead of 45 as in the original game), 4 train cards and 3 destination tickets, and must keep at least 2 of the tickets. There is no difference between long and short routes.

On your turn

Do one, and only one, of the following:

  1. Draw 2 train cards (or 1 face-up locomotive).
  2. Claim a route by playing a matching set of train cards. In 2- and 3-player games only one track of a double route can be used. Ignore the tunnel and ferry symbols on the routes.
  3. Draw 3 destination tickets and keep at least one.

End of the game

When a player has 2 or fewer trains left at the end of their turn, every player, including that one, gets one final turn.

Scoring

Score the routes you claimed (you can also do this during the game). Add the value of every completed ticket and subtract the value of every incomplete one. The player, or players, with the longest continuous path get a 10-point bonus.

Advanced rulesBased on Ticket to Ride Europe

Setup

Each player takes 42 trains (instead of 45 as in the original game), 3 train stations, 4 train cards and 4 destination tickets: 1 long route (blue background) and 3 short ones. Keep at least 2 of the 4 tickets.

On your turn

Do one, and only one, of the following:

  1. Draw 2 train cards (or 1 face-up locomotive).
  2. Claim a route by playing a matching set of train cards. In 2- and 3-player games only one track of a double route can be used. Tunnels: lay down the cards for the route’s length, then turn over as many cards from the deck as there are tunnel symbols on the route (instead of always 3). For each revealed card of the colour you played, or locomotive, add one more card of that colour or a locomotive, or take your cards back and lose the turn. Ferries: play one locomotive for each ferry symbol, plus cards of the right colour for the remaining spaces.
  3. Draw 3 destination tickets and keep at least one.
  4. Build a station in a city that doesn’t have one, by playing 1, 2 or 3 train cards of the same colour for your first, second or third station. A station lets you use one, and only one, route of another player into or out of that city to complete your tickets.

End of the game

When a player has 2 or fewer trains left at the end of their turn, every player, including that one, gets one final turn.

Scoring

Score the routes you claimed (you can also do this during the game). Add the value of every completed ticket and subtract the value of every incomplete one. Each player scores 4 points for every station still in reserve. The player, or players, with the longest continuous path get a 10-point bonus.
